The retail bakery is planned for a mixed-use double occupancy house with the HU-MU zoning designation. According to documents submitted with the city, renovations to the building will include upgrading a kitchen area with a ventilation hood, commercial oven, and large kettle for making pralines. The bakery will function as a made-to-order and carry-out business. In a brief phone call with What Now New Orleans, owner Cody Decuir said he’s a third-generation baker “just doin’ his thing” and the bakery is “a long time coming.”

This designation is meant to encourage commercial and residential uses that coincide with the surrounding neighborhood. Specifically, this zoning aims to encourage retail and personal services at the ground floor level that happen to be located alongside residential dwellings. HU-MU zoning aims to provide public benefits that enhance the overall neighborhood.

The planned bakery is located on a stretch of Tchoupitoulas Street that is Exhibit A for this type of zoning, with several shotgun houses converted into retail or service operations.
